Truck doesn't like wet weather

I'm new to the list, but have been a Toyota truck owner for the last eleven years. I have a 1993 2WD with the 22RE motor, which has been great, up until the last few years. My problem is the truck doen't run well in an extremely wet atmosphere (rain, fog, mist). I've tried the usual--changing plugs, wires, and cap. This seemed to work for awhile, but eventually the problem returned. I was told that Toyota's like original parts, so I repeated the process using their parts. I thought this solved the problem, but recently the rough running returned. I checked for moisture under the cap and found it dry as a bone. Finally, I relented and and took it to the dealer. They are still scratching their heads using their 3 "best" technicians. I should have an answer tomorrow. Wondering if anyone else out there might have experienced the same problem and provide some insight, or should I grab my ankled now.

Since you went to the dealer,yah..grab ankles hahaha but, since it sounds like you spent some time trying to fix it on your own,we dont shun you. The only thing that i could think of where wetness could be a factor would be water condensating in your distributor cap, wetness confusing your maf sensor,or possibly getting some bad fuel.I work at a dealership, where we recently pulled a tank out of an 04',and found the fuel to be contaminated with water, presumably from buying bad gas.I was also wondering if your truck had an underhood pad,as these are designed to prevent distributor condensation.good luck, and let us know what you find.

out here in the northeast climate(snowand salty roads)the89 to95 pick-ups and 4Runners rust in the very top corners of the firewall. This allows water to leak in around the heater fan and where the ecu is located, corroding some of the terminals and causing lots of mysteries.maybe you've got an interior moisture problem.

It seems they found the problem--cracked coil allowing moisture to get in. It only took them three hours of scratching their heads and a 98.00 part.

Now the dealer tells me that once coil was replaced, CHK eng. light came on and motor stalled. After further diagnosis, I now need a Air Flow Meter for a whopping $500. I found one in junk yard for $75. Where is this meter located and how difficult to change?

And no, I don't know how to put a 4.3 V6 in your 84....get your own post.

Hey Burger,

Would the air flow meter be affected by wet weather? I think they solved the problem with the new coil, but now the computer is telling them the meter is bad so its a good opportunity to shaft me for more cash.

Thanks for the input.

Hiwaystar,I honestly don't know if wet weather would affect the air flow meter but i do have doubts over whether or not that it is cotributing to your problem.the air flow meter measures the amount of air going to the throttle body(a big flap is pushed open by the air being sucked in) and then the ecu adjusts the mixture accordingly.if moisture was getting into the internals of the meter it may affect it,but if the unit was faulty, your truck would run shitty all the time.you could probably seal the box up with blue silicon anyway.good luck.
