22re water in oil

I purchased a 1993 toyota truck . I was told the motor was bad. I had a 1993 toyota and was hit broadside by a lady that ran a red light. I pulled out the complete engine from the 1 i just purchased. I cheched the dipstick and it looked like there was water in the oil. It was almost like mud. Now I pulled the motor from the truck that was hit. It ran fine even after the accident. I changed the spark plugs, replaced the oil filter, and the oil. When i drained the oil it looked like regular old oil that just needed changing. Ok I put the motor in my new truck, hooked everything up replaced the new battery. Filled the radiator with antifreeze. I got in the truck , it started right up. I let it run, watched the radiator and poured about a gallon of straight water in it. Turned the heater on and waited to see if all the dash guages worked. Temp guage started to move . I then looked at the radiator again and checked the level 1 more time . It was still down and i added more water. I then looked at the guages and the oil light was flickering . I then checked the oil and the stick showed water . I pulled the drain plug from the pan and all of the antifreeze , water then the oil drained into the pan. How could the water get in the pan if before i put the motor in and changed the oil it looked normal. Engine ran fine, never got hot . I just cant figure it out. Can somebody help me out ? PLEASE thank you richard

Are you sure that you didnt pour antifreeze into the valve cover (just kidding) Actually lots of probabilities here,My first thought would be to fill the coolant system and then pressure test the radiator-coolant system(dont run motor)with the oil drain plug out. If,at that point, coolant fluid goes into the crankcase; You have a starting spot to begin your diagnosis. If your motor never"got hot",then its possible that the timing chain wore through the cover, andis leaking through the hole,That particular job is a repair that does not require removal of the cylender head.It involves a chain set and taking the cover for a trip to the welder.since you have a spare 22r there, this might not be necessary if you wish to part it out and simply use that for the one thats in the truck now.

sir, It ran about long enough to open the themostat. ! question for u. how come when i drained the oil, while the motor was still out of the truck the oil looked fine? I took the head off today.I did notice that the timing chain guide was broken and wear does show on the left side of the housing.

GREG, I drained the oil right away, the motor did not get hot. There was atleast 2 gallons of water and antifrezze combined plus the oil. In a matter if just a few minutes. I should take the timing chain housing off and check it . I dont think thats the problem.

Murphy's law.the old oil looked okay because you hadn't put the engine in the truck yet.as soon as you did, though, and started it up, since your tensioner wasn't pumped up,the chain chose that instant to wear through the cover. Yup, murph's law sucks

Fix that leak quickly! I took my time (a little over a month), then spun a bearing on the test drive due to the antifreeze reacting with the bearing material. It's a real bit** having to rebuild an engine with only 100,000 miles on it.....

I'm happy to say my Tonka Truck is now certified healthy again and enjoying our new 4 foot snow drifts! It was a learning experience, but I would have preferred just fixing my timing chain issue. If your guide is gone, I'd bet it is the timing chain cover. I just replaced it with a Rock cover, nice beefy looking cover.

Good luck!
