new tacoma bed cutouts

It astounds me that nobody at the dealership where I got my new Tacoma had any idea what function the square cutouts found on either side of the bed walls are for. I also have seen no info on Toyota's website as to why they are there. They don't really work for attaching things (no lip for bungee hook) and they aren't real handy for storage since they don't have a cover like the actual storage compartments built into the bed. I'm still baffled.

Those can be removed to gain access to the inner fenderwell bolts. As well as access to the gas filler neck. Instead of putting a panel there they designed it as a pocket to put stuff in. To take them out lift up on the bottom of the pocket and it chould come out.
