timing adjusting

Can you rejust the timing chain without removing the timing chain cover. I just reinstalled a new head and think the timing is off. I'm not getting any compressing on cyl 1, but getting it on 2 and 3 and little on 4

you could put the crank on TDC (when the notch is at the 0) and then take the cam cover off and see if the colored link is at the raised dot in the cam sproket, if its not, try rotating the crank one full time, so the nick lines back up with the '0'. If it still doesn't line up, then you can crack the bolt that holds the sprocket to the cam and pull it off the cam. carefully rotate the cam and sprocket (don't rotate the chain) till the raised dot on the cam sprocket is lined up with the colored link. Then you'll have the engine timed at #1 TDC compression stroke. Be sure to reline your distributor as well.

Hope this helps.
