Trailer Wiring

I have a 2000 Tacoma 4X4 with 2700 motor. I bought it new with the tow package and the brain box that makes the trailer lights never did work right. They had a recall on that box and replaced it a couple of years ago. It worked for awhile but now only some of the lights work on the two different trailers I use. I hesitate to go back to the dealer, afraid they might install another bad box in my truck that would not last. Is there an after market box I could put on my truck or should I just go back to the dealer and have him check it out and anstall another one?

Where is that box located? Thanks!

My suggestion is to check out the circuits on the pigtail on the truck.
If they all work then check out the trailers.

It is possible that as you are having trouble with different trailers that they might be wired wrong. Even a bad ground on the trailer itself will give you wierd lights.

If the pigtail doesn't check out, I'd let the dealer replace it as long as it was on his nickel. If it is past any warranty, I'd look elsewhere--JC Whitney is a possibility. Those things are usually made to connect into the harness at the rear of the truck. You can trace the wires easily. It is probably a good idea to make sure that it is reasonably protected from spray from the tires or whatever.
