yah,you need to take the rad out for clearance and maybe the fan.the tranny is pretty syraightforward, take off your starter and all the 17mm bolts.the two on the top on each side are a bit of a pain, break them free using a box end on the bolt and another box end wrench jammed in the open end for leverage(it's a really tight spot). Then use a rachet wrench or if you are lucky, your fingers to back them out.taking these out FIRST is the easier way.

I just finished rebuilding my 22RE in/out of my 884Runner 4x4, so my experience should be pretty close to what you need to know. Yes, the engine can be pulled out without the tranny. As was mentioned earlier, remove the two (PITA) bolts from the top of the bellhousing first. I used a deep socket, a u-joint and two 12" extensions to take it down si I could reach from under the tranny. The rad has to go. If it is not too difficult, remove the fam also although you do not have to for clearance. It goes easier if you brace the tranny up so the bellhousing is up against the firewall to angle up the assembly.

However, the oil pan can be pulled and the work may be done in-frame (I don't know what you need to do, but...). Lift the engine until the belhousing is touching the firewall. Stuff wood into the gap at the engine mounts so you can pullout your jack. Drop your steering stabilizer. The oil pan can be dropped, then undo the 4 12mm bolts on the oil pickup while the pan is still under the engine.Drop the pickup into the pan, then the pan can be (just barely) pulled out the front.

If you have any more questions on this, PM me about it. I have had to pull and install my engine twice, and have inspected the bottom end three times using this process.

Uses more oil than gas.

In my 79 4x4 P/U I took the oil pan off without doing anything, just un-bolted it and boom it slid out.
