I just purchased a 94 Toyota Truck 4X4 for my son, after getting it home and taking it to the dealer to be inspected, I was told it failed emissions testing. The HC readings were very high which I was told is a rich condition. I have since replaced O2 sensor, plugs wires, oil, MAS Sensor, and I checked the EGR valve and the timing. The truck also seems to have no power. This very frustrating and I'm ready to get rid of it! Please help! Thanks
I'm no expert but I would change the air filter and run a good fuel injector cleaner through it before I gave up. If that didn't help I would check for a cracked exhuast manifold or other exhuast leak upstream from the 02 sensor. I would also replace the coolant temp sensor(cheap and easy to replace). If none of this helped I would next ream out the catalytic converter. Ooops, you should replace your cat, you won't pass emissions with it reamed out.
How many miles on this unit and is it burning oil?
Thanks, Yes I did replace airfilter and I have run several cans of injector cleaner, and I fixed the exhaust leaks. The truck does use oil at a fairly quick rate. The truck has only 95,000 miles on it. How would replacing the coolant temp sensor effect it running rich? It has standard size tires.
Yep, I agree with texas12. Try a thicker oil if your climate will tolerate it. I would recommend 15W-40 if you stay warmer than 15 degrees F. If you get colder try 5W-40. You should burn less oil with the XW-40 and your worn rings will seal better. You may even get better gas mileage and power. In the summer you could use 15W-50. If you burn a quart of oil in 1000 miles I would sell the vehicle.
The coolant temp sensor may be sending an incorrect reading, thus affects fueling. I have had this problem, computer thinks the engine is colder than it is.
Thanks for the response. How would the oil use cause the Hydro Carbon readings to be high? I thought this was a rich condition meaning it was burning to much fuel, which by the way it gets terrible gas mileage. If the engine is garbage is there a source for remanufactured engines that is reliable? or should it be rebuilt?

Isn't gas just refined oil? If you're using a lot of oil and it is not leaking, then you're burning it. Oil will not burn as effeciently as gas and produce higher hydrocarbon emmissions.

My hunting buddy wanted to get his truck engine rebuilt a few years ago. He looked long and hard to find someone reliable to rebuild it. It ended up costing more than buying one already rebuilt. It is probably better to buy one rebuilt with a good warranty. However, maybe all you need is rings and possibly valve seals. Another option is a used, low mileage engine.
Thanks Texas 12, I'm now getting a better idea of how burning oil would effect the HC readings. By the way I have also noticed what sounds like a Rod knock. So with all this I think it's time to look for a replacement engine. Any suggetions on where to find an outfit that sells dependable rebuilt engines with some performance? Also where can I find aftermarket performance parts? I'm used to working on old Mopars not Toyota's.
could be timing knock , predetonation it sounds like a knock. im pulling my engine and rebuilding it myself. the machine work is 285 bux and the rebuild kit is 225 with everthing you need including gaskets not including rebuilding the head which is 140. you can rebuild your engine alot cheaper than someone else will do it for its just a matter of having the place to do it and the time if you know what your doing.
First I would perform a leak down test and a fluid analysis test on the engine to pin point problem.
You can buy a used low miles (140-200 000 miles) healthy engine between $150-300 and
not more from a 1985-95 4-Runner/pickup as a rebuilt one can be bought for:
