High Oil consumption

I have a 94 22re engine that is going through 2-3 quarts of oil a week with a lot of black soot comming out of the tail pipe. Also $10 of gas a day. I performed a compression check and all the cylinders are in specs reading betweem 150-160 psi. Could this be blow by the valve stems? There also seems to be a lot of pressure in the valve cover which could be blowing oil into the intake. Anyone have ideas how to check this problem? Something else strange happened when I removed the oil cap while the engine was running, the engine started running slower and rougher.
Thanks

Do a wet test, record the readings of a comp test then squirt about a tea spoon of motor oil and test comp again, if the press goes up your rings are toast.

remove and inspest your spark plugs, look at the tip, if half of it is a different color then the other ( its kinda hard to explain)....usualy when the exhust valve guide is leaking you will find black deposits on one side of the electrode, as the oil gets on it from the exhust valve, keep in mind the exhust guides allways wear faster due to the heat.
by what you described, I'll say you need a ring job at least.

Did you check to make sure that it was recieving a vacuum from the intake?? If not do so and clean the port and hose!! If you have 150 to 160 compression dry your engine should be fine.
