4-runner towing question

My 4-runner has a 5000lb. limit according to the owners manual. I need to tow a trailer weighing 4500lbs. and me and my boyfriend's combined junk, possibly putting me over the limit. How far over the line can I get away with going and still tow safely? My mechanic says 5000lbs is the company covering their butts and it can actually tow alot more. Any advice?

What year and engine? Automatic or manual shift? You can probably pull 6500 lbs. without a lot of difficulties but it going to depend on the transmission and engine!!

ive heard that you can get a fine if you are caught hauling more then the reccomended weight of the truck in your trailer. Just be careful, and make sure you have trailer brakes on your truck for that kind of weight.

I have read the sam ethings as well as being liable if you get into an accident, whether it may have been your fault or not.

There are so many things that go into pulling a trailer safely besides just GVW's and tongue weight. I have a 4400 lbs. UVW 29' trailer that I pulled with our 2001 Tahoe that had a 7100 lbs towable weight rating. My new Tacoma is rated such that it would be able to tow my trailer. There is no way I would consider towing it. I know from experience it is to big.

Take a look at http://www.rvtowingtips.com

There is alot of good towing info on this site.
