I have a 84 celica gts with a 22re, and i'm posting in here because there seems to be alot more knowledge of those in here, than in the celica forums. anyways, it's been cutting out like crazy lately. to the point where i can't drive it, but i can't pin down the probelm. in my opinion, it really feels like fuel cut, but could be ignition. there's no rhythm to it, it just buck like crazy. it's not constant or consistant, just random bucking, varying in frequency. it has gotten worse and worse, then it died out completely and wouldn't start. plugs and wires were already new, so i replaced cap, rotor, fuel pump, and fuel filter. then it ran awesome for about 3 days, then started cutting and buckiing again, so i replaced the coil, ran great for another 3 days, then started cutting out again today. it's really starting to drive me crazy. the only things i can figure is A) the alternator isn't putting out enough juice, which i think it may not be. but i think that would be more of a constant lack of ignition, not random and violent cutting out, right? or it's gota be a sensor or electrical problem. maybe the power source to the fuel pump is being broken randomly. what senors would cause fuel to cut out? i don't knwo what to make of it, and help would be aprreciated. thanks.

I have had a similar problem with my TBI Chevy 350. It would stumble every once in a while, you would never know when it would happen, it would just all of a sudden do it. There wasn't really anything that you could do while driving to cause it to happen. It got so bad the engine would die almost everytime. Its scary when you are turning a corner, and your power steering goes out because the engine stumbles and dies.
The problem with my Chevy was the EGR valve. I even took the valve out and it seemed like it was working when vacumm was put on it, but it was still bad. I thought maybe the problem I had with my chevy may be similar to the 22RE. So....maybe a bad EGR valve???? Its just a guess...we'll see what others think.
Also, it could be the 02 sensor? I know that if it bad it will cause the engine to stumble.
Power to the fuel pump comes by way of an interlock in the MAF. If the MAF does not sense intake air flow, the fuel pump will not turn ON.
How do you know if that is your problem? I don't know. You can clean the contacts and see if that helps. I think there was a previous thread with directions on cleaning it.

About half of the ECU codes stored on the first & second generation EFI Toyotas don't show a constant blinking check engine light therefore you must pull the ECU codes and auto tranny computer codes to see if a fault is registered.
To pull the ECU codes:
All 1980-1995 and including 1995 EFI equipped vehicle allow you to find engine and related faults by pulling the ECU (computer) codes without the need for a handheld OBDII diagnosis scanner, the sites listed below have the fault codes needed to pull the codes and the instructions on how to do it:
Pulling the ECU codes is the first thing I do to diagnosis a problem thereafter I reset the ECU to see if the same problems show up and if so I then take voltage measurements both with the engine running and not and compare with the factory service manual,I also close the ignition switch after a cold engine and also after a warm engine and compare them with the factory service manual. This technique will completely isolate your problem without having to do trial and error and it is the technique I use when repairing tv's,vcr's,home/car audio.
Any Public Library in your area would have the Factory service manual,Haynes,Chiltons,Mitchells,Clymers,Bentley and Toyota repair books.
1)buy a used one off e-bay
2)some Toyota dealerships may give you one or sell it for $10-20 (used) as most Toyota dealerships don't repair many old Toyotas and no longer need the service manual
3)some public libraries sell their old books as they are not in demand any longer
4)some free buy & sell classified papers, websites and bulletin boards may have some used ones for sale
5)some junk yards may have one laying around
6)some Toyota specialty garages may have one laying around and no longer use it as the vehicle may be too old and those mechanics probably have so much experience that they could publish their own factory service manual with corrections and "real world repair tips"
7)if someone has the FSM maybe they could scan all of the pages and post it on a site for all of us to download or view.
