Question Open or Locking Rear?

I have a '96 T100 4X4 5Spd. Manual with open rear differential (there was not option for a LS or locking diff.) I have found it fine in deep snow and the relatively tame back logging roads that I have travelled while in Maine on vacation.

The 2005 Tacoma offers a locking rear differential option. I am considering it but do not know if I should get it or not?

Given the driving I do, do you think I need it?

Advantages?

Disadvantages?

TIA

Lockers will only help you in the most serious of off roading conditions. I'm not sure if it's the same as mine (03), but it can only be used in 4 Low and first gear, if a standard. I have used it twice and I have 30K on my truck. I can't think of any dissadvantges of having one. Go ahead and get it, you might need it once or twice.

"OEM" Locker:
Advantages - almost unstoppable, almost a go anywhere, no clutch plate to wear out.

Disadvantages - can only be used in 4lo and 1st gear as stated earlier, you still have an open diff in 2wd and 4hi.

LSD:
Advantages - automatic, perfect for everyday driving in all weather conditions, good for gravel and moderate logging roads.

Disadvantages - average life is 40k, helpless if one of the rear is off the ground(in 2wd), helpless in angle climbs(in 2wd & 4wd).

Did I miss anything else.

IMO, it's always better to have a locker than a lsd. But in this case toyota wanted it to be idiot proof so they made it work only in 4lo which the average joe rarely ever use. I like to have the option of engaging it at will or in my case automatic. It's totally up to you. You got along fine with open diff, a lsd would improve your go motion, a locker will get you into trouble cuz you went farther then you should, hehe, you'd be surprise.
