Flat Towing 4WD

I want to flat tow my 2001 4WD Tacoma with 5 speed behind my motorhome. Toyota manual says no but I saw a guy in Laughlin last spring towing a crew cab 4WD. Spoke to him and he had a driveshaft disconnect (Remco?). I can remove four bolts todisconnect rear shaft and save $1000 but should I place tranny in neutral and transfercase in H2? Front shaft spins freely in H2 but engaged with transfercase in neutral, will I risk any damage? Do I really need to disconnect driveshaft on a stick? Will odometer run without engine on and driveshaft connected? Any info would be appreciated! DynastyPusher

put the truck in neutral, and move the transfer case lever (the 4wd lever) to N or neutral. this disengages the transfer and i thnk it even disengages the trandsmission. (anyone correct me if im worng on this) Ive learned this from reading it in my owners manual, and have tried it. I can put mine in 1st gear, and disengage the transfer into N, and the truck wont move at all. Im not sure about the odometer though. Id come to believe that it would if you have a "mechanical" odometer, but maybe for the digital ones it wont run. Not sure on that one.

Appreciate you Response and Thoughts

Thank you for responding and sharing your ideas. After I read your response I consulted my 2001 Owner's Manual and under the section for emergency flat towing of the 4WD it states, "Put the transmission in neutral (manual) and set the transfer in H2." I agree that shifting the transfer case will disengage the engine from the drivetrain but my goal is to disengage the front and rear axles from the transfercase. I think what you state is true for older 4WD models having owned two FJ40 Cruisers ('72 & '76 with 350 Chevy and snowplow) and '66 2 1/2 Ton International 4WD. Just shift transfer into neutral, unlock front hubs and your done but mine doesn't have locking hubs and when I shift transfer to "N" the front shaft is engaged (Won't turn freely), when I shift to "H2" the driveshaft spins freely. Strange!? Thanks again. DynastyPusher

Flat towing a 2002 Sequoia Limited

I am in the process of purchasing a motorhome behind which I want to tow my 2002 Sequoia. It has an automatic, electronic four wheel drive activation switch but also has a floor mounted lever with which you can select 4H, 4L, and neutral. May I simply place this lever in N, the transmission lever in N and tow it?
