I have a 89 ext pickup with a 22re with just the standard gauges (water temp, speed, and fuel) and i want to mount an aftermarket tach, but Im not sure where a good place to mount it would be and what kind to buy. Also, is installation very difficult, i plan on doing it myself and any help would be appreciated!
I installed an aftermarket tach in my '85 when it was new. The factory manual showed the wiring for connecting the factory tach, but the wires were not in the harness. I am an electrical engineer, so I had no problems figuring where to connect it. I would suggest you figure that out before buying one. There used to be different types of pick-ups for tachs. If you can find one that clamps around a distributor wire, that would most likely be the easiest to use.
As for location--I strapped mine to the steering column in a location that did not block the view of the dash instruments.
I found a sunpro 8,000rpm tach for about 50 bucks at autozone and was wondering if this was an ok deal and brand. Im still not sure where i should mount it (the tach im looking at is 3" diameter i believe) i was thinking about behind the wiper control arm on the right side under the instrument panel. thanks for the help!
check out the line on autometer, they have so many brands like "phantom=which are white, cobalt= different colors". in my racecar i have all autometer phantom gauges and they are so awesome in the day and in the night. easy to install and are very reliable.
I have an 88 pickup (without tach ) and i mounted mine (2 & 3/4 inch, $35 at advance autoparts) to the left of the left vent (pointing out toward window) and its worked out great for me; i can see it clearly and its not blokcing my view of anything
The sun-pros are good, I had one in my 85 pu, I have seen the smaller ones mounted under the upper lip around the instrument cluster to left side, it seems to work well and doesn't get in the way, I had a larger one and I put it on top of my instrument cluster to left a bit. as for wiring they aren't very complicated if you have any mechanical/electrical abilities, i ran mine before I knew what a coil was.
thanks for all the help! Reb, where exactly did you put the tach, you said to the left of the left vent, but there isnt that much space there?! I assume you mounted it facing you? Thanks again!
i have an 88 PU with the 22R and im also wanting to hook up a tach... anybody happen to know what wire i'd hook up to? also the location of it. thanks in advance

I went the e-z route, I went to salvage yard & purchased a used gauge cluster with tach for my 1989 V6 extracab, MY truck was already wired for the tach to work. I had to buy a oil pressure sender to operate the oil gauge. of course the V6 & 4 tachs are differant. Darrin
when i posted last i said that the tach was to the left of the cluster, that was a bit of a brain fart on my part. what i meant to say was that the tach is on the left of the guage cluster with the bracket pointed out, so it's just above the vent. sorry about that!
Some find eh? That was my installation... hehe, Probably one of the few posts on TN out of my roughly 400 that has helped anyone out a lot.
BTW I was very happy with the location until just recently. I bought 2 gauges and pods, a voltmeter and vacuum gauge, and I can't really fit a double gauge pod on the A-pillar because of the tach. If you're planning on getting more than 1 gauge for your A-pillar, I would suggest finding some other place to mount it. But if not, that's a great place for it. You can see it easily, but it doesn't block any view.
