The 22R runs a carburetor, while the 22RE has electronic fuel injection.

the 22r & 22re are the same block & head the re is EFI and makes about 5 hp more in stock form. as far as what kinda hp you can make depends on how much $ you want to spend and how long you want it to last. you can get about 140hp with a cam, header, carb & intake upgrade and still have a verry reliable engine with stock internals. you can get around 200hp+ with some big pistons, compression, porting sidedraft carbs and some ARP hardware to hold it all togather. I have seen some 350-400hp turbo engines but the head and block are the only oem parts left and probably $8k later.

Thanks for the help guys. I was just wondering which engine (22r(e)) would make more hp easier and more cost efficient. BTW, is there a turbo or s/c out for the 22r and re? Because that would be a good power adder. I want about 200+ horses, not lookin to race, just want some grunt. Thanks.

i hear ya! i have the 22R-TE ('84-'88) it has the turbo and fuel injection. The engine is damn near identical (to the 22R-E)but the pistons are alittle bit smaller (they heat up more) and the head has bigger valves. There is a web page dedicated to this engine that i have found
http://www.well.com/user/mosk/welcome.htm it is mainly about doin the engine up but you might want to check it out. in the stock form they only give you an extra 30hp but you can really feel it when she winds up!!

actually the rte block has more oil passenges to help with cooling and lube. its hard to say about whats better the r or re. the re is more efficient but i have a fully built re and it dynoed like crap. ive heard that bigger power (less economy) can be had with the carbs. so its all about what you're going to use it for.

The turbo block and 85-95 22R and 22RE are laser blocks. The only diff between the turbo block and r/re block is there is a oil return hole for the turbo.

And running a 22rte you can push 450-500 though you run into fuel issues because the stock ecu goes into over boost around 12-14psi and shuts the fuel off to the motor. You can by pass that by just dumping the ecu and mass airflow sensor and running a standalone or by running a alochol injection system so when you reach your 12psi the fuel shuts off all together and run basically alochol.
