Exclamation 89 22re timing issue Help!

I have a 89 toyota pick up 4X4 and I am having fun! When I put a timing light on it at idle it is off the timing tab by at least an inch advanced and has a really high idle. This is expected when it is running around 20-35 degrees advanced. The wierd part is as soon as I twist the throttle open really fast the timing drops down to the 8 degree mark almost at the same rate as the twist and the revs pick up really slow. I unplugged the TPS and both checked the resistance to be sure it was okay and left it unplugged to with the truck running to see if that effected the timing, it did not. In giving it these quick revs the timing chain has not made any noise from hitting the timing cover which leads me to believe it is okay. Has anyone seen this before? Please send me any info you have because this thing is starving for power and I cant stand not being able to get on the freeway. Thanks Chris

First, I would check your ECU for codes. To do this you short curcuit a plug in the engine compartment. Take a look in your manual and it will give you better instruction. After it is short circuited, the "check engine" light will flash and let you know if you have any codes.

Also, when you have the truck at idle and you short circuit the plug, this should change the timing of the engine (short circuiting the plug disables the electronic advance). If by doing this the engine doesn't change, something is up with your TPS. If something is wrong with the TPS, you should get a code too.

I was having a problem with setting my timing (me shortcircuiting the plug was not doing anything). I discovered a code telling me the TPS was faulty. I took it off and it was out of adjustment. I fixed it and put it back on and now everything it fine.

When you hit the throttle, the timing becomes less advanced until the electronic advance starts. Mine does the same thing (at least I think it still does it...I didn't check after I fixed the TPS).

If your TPS is okay and you are able to disable the electronic advance (by short circuiting the plug), just set your timing to 5 deg. advanced (w/ electronic advance disabled). With the electronic advance enabled, your timing should be around 12 degrees advance at idle.

Here is a good site that shows you how to troubleshoot and adjust your TPS...worked great for me: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TPS/index.shtml

Check for any codes first....

Hope this helps.

That how to on the tps is great Thanks for posting it. I think this may solve my inability to set timing and an overheating prob that because of a overheated bearing I had the whole engine 22re rebuilt. Thanks, Pete
