TRD oil filters

This is my first Toyota and am coming up on my first oil change. Are TRD oil filters worth using? Should I go to synthetic oil now (3000 mi) or wait until I have more break-in miles on the truck?

TRD filters are nice....but too pricey in my opinion. I recently switched to Mobil 1 Synthetic Oil in my 2004 Tacoma (at 15,000 miles) and I just use a Mobil 1 oil filter- cheaper than a TRD filter and works great- I plan on changing my oil about every 4,000 or 4,500 miles. Just don't use a Fram oil filter- they are terrible. I don't think it will hurt your truck to switch to synthetic now, I know a few people who have used synthetic from the beginning w/out any problems. I used to hear a lot about people having problems if they switched too early- but I think most of that is not true w/ today's newer engine technology (although I will admit that I waited a bit just to be safe).

What's wrong with fram's? I've used frams ever since I learned to drive. Never had a problem nor has any of them failed. Paying extra for a brand name is a waste if a generic brand can do the same job just fine.

The filtering material used in a FRAM oil filter has the consistancy of cardboard...it can break down and screw your engine up...big time. In my opinion they are one of the worst brands of oil filters, you are better off going w/ a generic brand- most of them have a much better filtering material when compaired to FRAM's.

If you look around at any of your local autopart stores or even your local Walmart should have Mobil 1 filters. Puralator (sp?) are said to be fairly good as well. If you are still unable to find them look online- you should be able to find someone to ship them to you.

whichever filter you use on your toyota, make sure it has an anti-drainback valve inside of it.This is standard on toyota brand filters, and some aftermarket(including fram),and looks like a metal mushroom inside the filter, and keeps more oil inside the filter,so that your engine isnt starved at startup, and generally makes stuff last longer.

You can get some Mobil 1 filters from Pep Boys. If you have a Napa auto parts around, the Napa Gold filters are good too. I second the Purolator, but get the Purolato PureOne instead. If you want to know all there is to know about oil then go to www.bobistheoilguy.com and make a pot of coffee too.
