Anyone have any dash removal tips?

89 pickup xcab 22re 4x4.

So last summer my dash lights and tail lights went out. blew new fuses as fast as I could feed the panel. I chased the line forward from the rear, cutting in and running 12v to check towards the front. Got to under the passenger seat and the wire runs up behind the engine control module under the dash on right. Sooo I ran a wire off the back of the fuse panel for the tail lights and bypassed the dash. I also bypassed the instrument panel backlighting (the safety gimmick thing).

Just got done the timing chain replacement (with thanks to D'Mon) so I figured I'd rip the dash out and continue chasing that line to find the short and get my dash lights back in the process.

What a bugger of a job that is! anyone have any tips or referals to a dash mounting diagram? at this point I think there's going to be a lot of twist ties involved in reinstallation cause it's become an uncontrolled extraction.
Thanks,
Pete

Well, do you want to just take off the front of the dash, or the whole damn thing? The front is easy to take off, just remove the screws and watch for the snaps around the speakers. Yours is probably a little bit different than mine because mine is an 87, but, you never know.

Hook a chain to it. Sorry. I don't think that helped.

Peter, I am positive your 89 & my 91 are nearly the same. Start by removing the panel below the steering wheel (5? screws & 1 10mm bolt)+unhook the hood & gas door release handles.
Next remove the ignition key cover (only clips so pull on it). then 5-10 screws for the guage cluster bezel that encases the cluster (also unhook your dimmer & other switches there). Then head on over to the glove box and take out the screws on the bottom and then push in on the sides of the glove box pocket to release the box from its home. Then the hard part. Remove all of the screws for the center dash cover around the stereo & vent controls. Get the ash tray out and cup holder out of there aswell. that should have you in there pretty deep and the dash top cover screws should be visible. That is as far as ive been into dash removal so hope it helps. Just dont lose the screws or you will end up with lose fitting rattling parts. But I say that as everyone says duh right. lol. Ben
