Timing Help

hello.. I have 91 toyota pickup with a 22re engine.. We just did a headgasket job, and did not mark the distributor on the engine, when we took it off.. It will not start now... Is there any way we can get the timing right to get it started? We do have a timing light. Thanks

To install the distributor, first make sure the engine is set to TDC. Place the distributor rotor in the 12 o’clock position and install it into the cylinder head. When the distributor contacts the drive gear on the cam, it will rotate counter clockwise to the #1 firing position or TDC. The timing may not be exact, but it will be close enough to get the engine running. Plug in the electrical connector for the distributor. Install the bolt and snug it down and install the distributor cap.

In those instructions it says... EFI-equipped trucks are set to 5-degrees BTDC with the EFI check connector shorted??? What is the efi check connector, and how do you short it??

Honestly I am not sure what they are refering to there.

I do the distributor installation as described (rotor button at noon then slide it in and it turns back to 11 as it hits the gear on the end of the cam)... put a timing light on it to get it close... then I advance it til I get spark knock then back it off til that stops... Old school toyota mechanic I learned from did it that way and it has been very effective for me....

There is a check connector right next to the fuse block in the engine compartment. Flip open the cover. Take a small bit of wire and strip each end back about 1/8". Stuff it into the two holes shown in your manual. That overrides the auto advance from the computer and sets it to basic static timing so you can adjust the distributor to 5 deg.
