Unhappy 22R Carb Issue...I think.

The engine runs a bit rough at idle, has noticeably reduced power, and tries to die when I brake to a stop. The original owner had the choke flap wired open. When I removed the wire, the truck began to run rich and very poorly. Placing the wire back, I've checked for leaking vacuum lines (by spraying starting fluid using one of those small tubes to minimize overspray) and found one big vacuum line with a split in the end of the hose. Replaced that and it seemed to help with the power loss slightly...or it could be my imagination. The other thing I noticed is that the fuel sight glass is completely full...all the way to the top (had to take off the indicating plate that sits over the sight glass to see it). Doesn't this indicate that I have a float problem? And if so, would it cause my current problems? Thanks for any assistance.

I have a 22r in an 87 Toyota, and I get the same problem some times. Maybe one day out of 10, the carb makes the truck chug, underpower, and die at stops. We had the carb rebuilt, but, it didn't help much. I think its really a fact of getting a new carb. Sorry, that's all I can suggest, unless you try to clean it/run some Chevron w/Tecron thru it.

yea id say its a float problem, either u need a new float or it needs adjustment. My 1988 toys sight glass shows the fuel level half way up the glass and it runs great.

I'm having the same problem w/my 82. I talked to a few people and they said it should be a carb or vac prob. I say put some side dafts on it and call it a day. IMO

Saito, the symptoms you site do suggest that there are at least some problems with the carburetor float. The fuel level in the sight glass should be in the center. That should be corrected before you proceed to other possible problems. Vacuum leaks from bad hoses or other sources will definitely harm the performance of your engine. If it is within your ability, try to make sure that all the vacuum lines are intact and correctly routed. There is a diagram on the underside of the hood which should help. Also check the intake manifold and carburetor gaskets with the starting fluid to make sure those are sound. Be extremely careful with the starting fluid as it is very volitile! The PCV valve is another possible leaker. Good luck.

I would look at the diaphram on the side of the carb that a vacuum line goes to. When this diaphram leaks it pulls fuel right into the intake, thus to rich. I think its called the AAP valve, I forget. But I have run across this when I had carbed toyota's and helped others with this problem. Its a simple look to check. Pull the vacuum line and see if it seems to be getting fuel or better yet use a vacuum pump on that line and create some vacuum and see if fuel flows in past the diaphram. If it does, its bad, there should be no fuel getting past that diaphram into a vacuum line.

I have the same symptoms only the truck hasn't died on me. I about s**t my pants when I bought it and pulled over to fix the passanger mirror on the side of the road. It started idleing rough and I though here we go, I own the car ten minutes and now it's dead. Luckily the toyota gods were looking over me and I made it home without a problem.
Going to be putting a tach and a few other guages in just to keep an eye on things.

I can't wait for my manual to come in.

USA Similar issues with 81

I am also having similar problems with the Weber carb on my '81. The fuel level in the sight glass is about half full, but the symptoms of intermittent, underpowered chugging are sure there. I backed out the electric choke and turned it so the butterfly valve is constantly open, but this only helped for a little while. I have resorted to buying a new Holley carb which has yet to come in. Hopefully the notorious chug disappears.
