No powerfor my 4 Runner

Hi,
My 95 4 Runner 3LV6 lacks total power and gets very poor gas milage.About a month ago it was fine. Then when it started running crappy I noticed some water droplets in the air intake hose. The truck got increasingly harder to start.I cleaned out the intake with a intake spray cleaner and a soft terry towel.I removed a good amount of sludgey matter around the EGR pipe.I still couldnt drive the truck without it bogging out in a few feet.
I let the truck sit for a few days and to my surprise it started right up and was driveable although still lacking any power.I have driven for short distances for the past two weeks and nothing has changed.I have been told that the engine could lack compression due to a leaking head gasket.I have no water in the oil and I am not losing any coolant but I can hear the coolant surging through the heater.Could the gasket be the cause. Also the engine is idling high at around 1750 R.P.M.s.Thanks for any guidence.
Danny

It could be a number of things. It could be plugs, oxygen sensor, clogged air filter, faulty mass air flow sensor. How long since you replaced the plugs wire and dist. cap? You can check your compression with a compression tester. If you do not have one most autoparts stores will lend you one. Also they will lend you an OBDII diagnostic. Put that on the truck and see what codes are coming up. That should at least point you in the right direction. The sludgey matter around your egr pipe sounds as if it was oil coming from the valve cover gasket. A leaky valve gasket should not be the cause of your problem. -Good luck

Hi,
thanks for the response.I checked the thing I know how to do The plugs are fine as well as the wires ,cap and rotor.I will pick up a compression tester this weekend and try to use it correctly.
I`m not sure though where the mass airflow sensor is located and how I would check it.Unfortunately my knowledge is very limited when it comes to these things, but I am learning as I go along. Thanks again for any input.
