Some help with exhaust work...

I have a 1995 Tacoma 2.7L 4cyl., and I'm pretty sure that I have a crack in my exhaust manifold. When idling it's fine, but when I accelerate it's a sort of clicking sound - not the hardcore clack from valves, but a tick. My grandpa used to work on cars and guessed that was probably it. Does that sound right?

If so, what does a crack in a manifold do? Is it harming my truck in any way?

Lastly, if I was to relace it would it be better to go exhaust manifold or headers? I'm pretty sure those aren't the same thing, but since I'm pretty much only certified to change my oil I'm coming to the masters for help!

Thanks!

A cracked manifold is a bit unusual but, certainly possible. Check for possible loose or missing bolts and bad gaskets as well. The leak may be dangerous to your health because of carbon monoxide poisoning. If the manifold is cracked and beyond repair, a header would be a good replacement and probably cheaper too. This is a simple repair that you, with a little guidance from your grandfather, can easily accomplish.

ive heard of those cracking on those yrs trucks. A header runs about 150$ +/- on JCwhitney.com. Id go with a header because of its ability to increase your power, and like gregory said, it probably cheaper too in the long run. It does not seem to be too hard of a task as there seems to be a fair amount of room to slide them in and out. (well, at laest on mine it does, but yours should be similar.) Good luck on fixing it.

Hey Nofear, I've got a question. Its kind of Off Topic, so sorry to the originator of this thread. Why do you only have 31x10.50's with a 3" body lift? You could get 33's easy with that. Are you on a different BS with your rims?

the guy that had it before me put those tires on. Not me. Id swap them out for 33's or bigger in a heartbeat, but the 31's only have like 4,000 miles on them so ill run them for a little while longer and then get bigger tires. The rims are like 16 or 17"s that were also put on before it got it.

check the manifold good, maybe you can find the leak. you said your grandpa used to work on cars so im gonna assume he can weld. if you can find the leak, just have him weld the manifold. so unless the leak is right on the flange, fixing the manifold and throwing it back on with a new gasket is alot cheaper than buying headers. just an idea....

you cant fit 33s with a 3" bodylift. you can get away with some 32x11.5s with trimming. but unless you change the gearing, your gonna loose all your power if you throw on 33s. gonna need atleast 4" if you want some 33's to clear

i probably wont keep the truck long enough to wear the 31's out so im probably just going to keep them on. I know i could get 33's on it no prob, (except for gearing) but im not sure about going wider because of space and the fact id probably need to buy wider rims.

your gonna have alot of rubbing if you try and put 33s on there. i dont think thay would look too good with the stock 15x7 rim, so you would need to get atleast a 15x8, maybe a 15x10. you should be able to fit 32s without too many problems, just some minor trimming(valance and pinch weld). but it all depends on how wide your going

Thanks for all of the feedback - and no biggie about talking of 33" tires, I'm toying with the idea, but being the starving college student that I am.... Thanks again, I'll let you know how it goes, should check everything out this weekend hopefully.

Oh, related question - what attaches to the end of the manifold? I mean, on one end it bolts to the cylinder head, but what at the other end? Am I going to need to mess with/weld anything else to fix this?

the pipe jsut keeps going back to the cat converter and then back to the muffler and tail pipe. IF you just weld up the crack, you wont need to worry about Anything. IF you are going to put on a new manifold or headers, you need to cut the old end off (probably best place is right before the cat) and install the headers or manifold and run a new pipe to the cat and either weld or bolt it in place.
