Question Power Steering Fluid?

I have an 87 Toyota 4Runner 5 speed standard with the 22R-E engine in it. The power steering is starting to sound a little rough, so I consulted the owners manual before adding fluid. It says to use Dexron or Dexron II Transmission Fluid. Is this correct? Just wanted to be sure. Thanks for your help.

Yeah, that's correct. Your manual is your car's Bible!

Canada Uh ?

unreal ... I just got done a mighty proud job on the tchain kit, and I just rolled the truck out of the garage yesterday ... with power steering fluid in the power steering pump.

So I'm going to casually saunter out to the garage and consult my bible to see if my 89 22re is going to get flushed momentarily or not. What a bugger, so the PSP fluid has detergents that will eat plastic or something I assume eh?

Uses more oil than gas.

Disconnect the return line at the reservoir, plug reservoir return inlet tube, route return line to a container to catch old fluid and start the flush process, adding ATF till the fluid is all pretty and red!! Simple as buttering toast!!

How come when they come out of the factory, it is using power steering fluid in the system? Even the reservoir has the clear fluid. It does not look like ATF.
