i have a 2001 taco and i filled up the other night, and i didnt go too far up interstate and came home and the gas needle went down to the 2nd line (3/4). is there anything that i could do to improve the gas mileage??
Checked your air pressure in the tires lately? Make sure it is over 35 psi. Make sure your air filter isn't very dirty. Do a fuel injection service and change your fuel filter. Have you changed your plugs in the last 30k?
Any write ups on how to clean the MAF and ensure that you do not break it?
I cleaned it once, but could not clean it too aggresively. However, If I am driving a 99 4runner the Check Engine Light would pop on if the sensor was damaged while I was cleaning it correct?
I very much doubt you need to worry about changing your spark plugs every 30,000 miles.
I would say every 100,000 miles would be fine for plug changes.
I just recently replaced the plugs in my F-150 (they had 110,000 miles on them) and to be honest with you, I am yet to see a MPG difference. I have noticed a slight increase in performance but Im still getting 15 mpg, just like I always have.
As was said, keep an eye on your tire pressure, change your air filter once a year (or more often if you drive in dusty conditions).
The simple fact is that Toyota trucks arent really known for being all that good when it comes to fuel milage. If you are getting 16-18 mpg you are doing pretty good. My '91 4Runner with the 3.0L V6 only got 14 mpg. My '85 4Runner with a 22R-E only got about 12 mpg.

Yeah, the prices are high everywhere. All I can say is get used to it, because the prices arent going to be coming down anytime soon (and maybe not EVER).
Prices here in Wisconsin and $2.15!

That's it? Here in So. Cal. $2.40 will get you regular unleaded and $2.60 will get you 91 octane (not even 92). Plus, everywhere you go in California is at least 20 miles away.
captain- why do you have 82,000 more miles until your a toyota owner? toyotas are awesome but why are you driving a ford??
You ready to read a looooooong post???
First of all, my '99 F-150 currently has 118,100 miles on it. I plan to drive this truck untill it has 200,000 miles on it and then trade it in on a Tacoma. I figure that 200,000 would be about the time Id want to look into getting something different.
My F-150 runs great, has very little rust and all in all is just in great condition. As much as I would love to go down to the local Toyota dealership and order a new Tacoma, it just doesnt make sense to spend the money now, when there is nothing wrong with the truck I currently have.
Now, to answer the second question, I have a rathar long story to tell you.
The year is 1999. At the time, I was driving a '91 4Runner SR5. Nice vehicle but I had begun to see that a truck would be more useful to me than would an SUV. I do a fair amount of hauling. I heat my house almost exclusivly with wood heat and I haul my snowmobile about twice a year.
Seeing as how I wasnt able to get a good deal on trading my 4Runner in on a used Tacoma, I decided to trade it in on a Ford Ranger. Basically, the Ford dealer was willing to give me $3000 more for my Ranger that any Toyota dealer was.
I drove the Ranger for 3 years and then had the opportunity to trade-up to an F-150 and have cheaper monthly payments, so I did.
So basically, the ONLY reason I currently am a Ford owner is because the price was right. However, here is my plan. I will drive the F-150 untill it has 200,000 miles on it. At that point I will have enough money saved away to where I can go and order a new Tacoma and pay for almost the entire thing in cash. I will basically be driving a brand new truck and my payments will probably be right around $100 a month.
