87 Timing chain replacement

I just put a new thermostat and water pump on my 87 22r the other day. I also need to put on a new timing chain, any tips to make the job go faster? Thanks.

Take a look at those threads and you should be able to get a feel for changing the timing chain.

Here are a couple websites that definitly helped me out a lot when I changed mine:

When you buy a kit, make sure that it includes a metal drivers side guide (OEM is plastic, which you don't want). The passenger side guide will be plastic. I recommend buying from "ENGNBLDR" off eBay. He sells a great kit with everything you need, including gaskets...for around $55. His kit also has a warranty. I was recommended to him by people here at TN, so I thought I should pass it along. Here is one he has up for auction right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33625

Some tips...if your drivers side plastic guide is broken, which they most often do, you should remove your oil pan and get out all the pieces of the guide.

Since all the bolts for the timing chain cover are not the same, and it does matter where they go, make a template. Get a piece of cardboard, and using this picture of the website above:

Sketch out the shape of the timing cover onto the cardboard. Then put holes in the cardboard where each bolt will go. Stick each bolt in as you remove it. Saves a lot of time and confusion...

Hope this info helps...
