5 Speed off 22RE

89 pickup. 22re xcab 4x4

clutch kit going in it. right off the bat instructed to take the shift lever & 4wd lever out. Took the 4 screws out of the plastic inserts, lifted the covers off the shifters. Broke 3 out of the 6 12mm head bolts that hold the cover on. The cover seems to hold the levers in place. I got them soaking in PB Blaster and tomorrow I'll try to extract the broken bolts, because as is the cover won't budge.

Any suggestions? Do I have to get the levers off for sure to do this job? I presume I've got to get these lever off or raise the engine out to slide the tranny off the back of the engine.

Haynes and Chilton seemed vague in this application. Neither had pictures that resembled my setup, chilton said to push down on the shift lever and turn counterclockwise. That led nowehere.

yes, the levers will have to come out, but the engine doesn't have to be raised, it only has to be supported in the back to keep it from falling.
