Thought it was a carb issue...
Hello everyone. Thanks for your help previously unfortunately, I am still experiencing problems after I've replaced my carb with a rebuilt unit from National Carburetors. I was sure it was the carb. Oh well. Anyway, here's the back-story to this truck. Maybe it'll shed more light on the problem.
The original owner was driving the truck when it suddenly (his words) died on him. He coasted into a parking lot to investigate. He found that when he tied the choke plate back (open...which is baffling to me since shouldn't it already be open???) it would start but wouldn't run very well. He managed to get it home. He rebuilt the carb (don't know his qualification for this) but it didn't help. He continued to drive it this way (don't know how he could stand it) for a while. He sold it to me and here I am.
The symptoms, before the rebuilt carb from National Carburetors: It would start easily (hot or cold) but would not idle well. Very rough, almost dying. Power was severely lacking. I could drive it but any load would require a downshift to second gear. Even then, it would barely go up a 5% incline. Once the engine was warm, and I would let off the gas to stop, the engine would almost die then come back to idle. Warm, it would idle, albeit roughly, but not trying to die.
Also, I replaced a vaccum hose (a 1/4" line) because I found that it was leaking. It seemed to help at the time and that's when I used the starting fluid to see if there were any other leaks. None found.
The symptoms after the installation of new rebuilt carb: Basically the same but worse in some instances. The dying when I let off the gas was much worse, actually dying a few times. After it was warm, the truck would not stay running. Otherwise, everything else is the same.
So that's it. My thoughts are that it has to be either a fuel issue, vaccum issue or (just thought of this) perhaps an exhaust issue, like maybe the Cat is clogged? I dunno. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
