22re back together and won't start--help please

I've got the 22re in my truck back together (just had head rebuilt) and it won't start.

I have spark.

Timing looks to be right--rotor points at number one when the timing mark is at zero.

I appear to have fuel to the rail--took off return line and it had gas in it.

I haven't checked cylinder compression yet as I don't have a guage handy. I will do that tomorrow.

What else should I look for?

Thanks in advance!

Is there more than one notch on the pulley? I'm home now and the truck's at my shop so I can't look.

I never rotated the engine from the time I pulled the head to the time I put the distributor back on so i don't know how I could be out 180--is it possible?

It turns over real easy--that's why I was concerned about compression. The guy that resurfaced the head says something about letting it set overnight to let the valves "bleed down" but I'm not sure I know what he's talking about.

are you sure you never moved the chain then ? maybe a link ?

you may just be out 1 tooth on the distributor or so if you never moved the crank ... but usually it'll run , but really rough ..

No theres not 2 marks on the pulley , one revelution is the intake , and next rotation is exhaust ....

Yeah, you need to make sure its tdc compression for starters. Either pull the cam cover and turn the engine over by hand until the timing mark lines up and make sure the cam lobes are nowhere near either intake nor exhaust rockers on #1, or, you can pull #1 plug and turn the engine over by hand until you feel air forcing out past your finger, then line up to the timing mark. Then check the dist.
If that's good, and compression is good, check your firing order on the plug wires.
The guy at the shop is thinking about hydraulic lifters, which you don't have, so never mind that.

Tried and tru rotor setup

Hi If you remove plug from #1 cylider and plug with a wad of napkin/rag, (I like to use the rubber top to my continuity tester) and then crank the engine tick-tick slow you will hear a pop when #1 should be firing, or close enough. So then look at your cap, trace #1's wire then set the distributor to it. Pete
