Well, I just finished replacing parts for my engine, and now that I have ran it some, I calculated my MPG. So far I have only ran approx 15 gallons through it (I dont have all the numbers at the moment..) , and I came out with exactly 17 MPG.
Before I started replacing stuff on the engine, I was getting around 18 (and that is mostly around town, back and forth to school....some highway miles). I didn't think my MPG would go down....
Here is what I have done:
-New Timing chain kit, along with new water pump
-New Cap/Rotor
-Accel Super Coil w/ 8mm plug wires (I opened the plugs gaps .005" for the hotter coil)
-New 02 sensor
-Valves adjusted
-TPS adjusted and working (it was out of adjustment)
-The fuel filter was replaced a while ago....
K&N filter is clean....
I thought with at least a new 02 sensor and fixing the TPS, my mileage might go up....I guess I was wrong.
I am no longer getting any codes...so thats good.
In the mornings, when driving (steady speed), the engine will hesitate for a second or two , and then smooth back out and is fine. This happens everytime. All I can think of is something happening when the engine gets to a certain temp, since it happens everytime....
I thought maybe the EGR system was giving me troubles. In my manual is says "hesitates under acceleration, accerates poorly or gets poor mileage, the EGR system is probably not shutting off". Today, I checked the EGR valve and it is working properly, and I cleaned out the filter for the EGR vacuum modulator, all the hoses are connected properly and look fine. So I guess the EGR system is okay...
I don't know what else to do. The MPG I am getting doesn't seem right, especially since I was getting better before....
Any input??? I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions...
short term mpg numbers don't mean much. Start keeping records every tank, then you will have some data to consider.
Yep, I already have a list going...
Before I did all this to the engine, I would occasionally check the MPG per tank after I fill up (I always know how many miles I go per tank because I have to use my tripometer as my gas gauge....my gas gauge doesn't always work). Anyway, I would get about 18, sometimes 19 MPG in just one tank....everytime. Same kind of driving on every tank also...back and forth to school, along with some highway miles.
So I was just confused why the same kind of driving after I did all this to the engine, I only got 17 MPG on a tank and a half...(the first calculation I did after 8 gallons..that was 15.5 MPG)
What MPG should one expect in a truck like mine? I have no idea...
Anything else I should check that I haven't checked yet?
I also forgot to mention that the exhaust is new, so my Cat is in good shape...
Your mileage doesn't sound too far off to me, maybe a bit low. Driving habits will make a difference. How about your tires--are they oversize? How is the pressure? Do you have auto tranny or stick? I agree with Jimm--keep continuous records on your mileage. The numbers for a single tank or two can be misleading. I have seen individual gas pumps that were off 5 to 10%.

I try to be as easy on the pedal as I can. My tires are stock, with normal pressure (I think I have them a 35psi, but I may be wrong)....5 speed manual tranny.
I have a list going...
Is there anything else that I should check/replace?? Nothing was really done to the truck before I got it, besides regular oil changes...thats why I was hoping to see a slight increase in my mileage with just the few things I have done...
I still don't know about the hesitation I am getting
Soudns right to me. Mine sucks bad, a 2wd, Auto 22re at 17mpg. I'm working on it though, just give it time.

That truck is a keeper....I wish I got somewhere close to that mileage. I know that the mileage obtained from a 2wd is different than a 4wd, so I guess I am stuck with the mileage I am getting.
Is the MPG affected a lot with just having a 4x4?.. compared to a 2wd
I guess I could clean my injectors, but that's a whole project that I don't want to get into....I did put some of that injector cleaner in with my gas, but I have heard it doesn't really do much....
I have a 94 2wd base pickup, 4 cylinder, 5 speed. I has 124,000 and is all original except for a 2.5" cat back exhaust with a dynomax muffler and an Amsoil air filter. I get 22-28 mpg mixed driving but I drive a lot of freeway miles. If I speed at 80, I get closer to 22, when I drive easy and no faster than 65-70, then I get 25-28.
Since you just changed your timing chain, your timing might be a bit off. Double check your timing.
How about gas? Are you using the same octane and same brand gas? Higher octane in lower compression engines will give you lousy mileage.
As for injectors, you should get them serviced. Many Pepboys, auto repair, and all dealers provides that service. Don't waste your money on additives.
Also, you didn't mention anything about new plugs. Did you switched over to a different type of plug?
My timing is good...5 degrees with jumper installed.
Same gas I have always been using...
For the injectors, would I just take them into a place and they would clean them, or would I be able to clean them myself? I thought about doing this, but its not on the top of my list because it seems like an involved project just to get the injectors out. I know for sure that they never have been taken off and cleaned.
Plugs: I didn't replace them when I did all this stuff, because they were replaced not too long before that. I did take a look at them and they looked okay (at least I think). What plug would you recommend to be running with my hotter coil (and what gap?).
You can go the cheap route and take it to a Pep Boys (or similar) and get it serviced while it's in the car, or you can do it the rigth way and removed them and send them out for cleaning/balance/blueprint. As for spark plugs, try Bosch Platinum 4 or NGK Platinum. I'm not sure if NGK or Denso makes Iridium for your application, but I have it in my 2002 BMW and it is NICE!!! You can get them on Ebay for cheap or check out www.clubplug.net.
