Noisy K&N Kit?

Quick question for you: I just put the K&N kit in my truck, a 2002 Tacoma with the 2.7 liter 4. Wasn't that hard to put in, you were all right about that. Here's the question, though: is it supposed to be so friggin loud?

When it drops down a gear to accelerate (its an automatic), the interior noise level really spikes. If it drops down 2 gears for hard acceleration, it is so loud it just about drowns out normal conversation.

Anyone else notice this? I don't think I put it in wrong, since it really is pretty easy to install. For what its worth, it does accelerate better. I guess the price of that is a little more noise.

What do you guys think?

Wow. Normal, huh? The f-er's LOUD, man. Sounds cool at idle, but I'm a little old to have a car that sounds like your stereotypical rice rocket.

33 with 4 kids. We've got a---dare I admit it???---minivan that my wife drives to haul the kids. For kids under the age of 10 or so, SUVs just don't compare to minivans as far as making your life easier.

Plus, I work in an ultra-conservative money management firm. Lots of Audis, Bimmers, Mercedes, etc. I stick out like a sore thumb. I used to have a VW Golf--I had a '3' sticker on the back of it and I got crap for it regularly.

I'll just have to get used to the extra noise. It's not horrible, just unexpected. Thanks for the input.

Thanks man. 4 great kids, great wife, reasonably healthy (knock on wood). I can't complain!

Yeah, there's alot of golf played where I work. If I ever have that much time on the weekend, I'm either riding my mountain bike or going to the skatepark with the kids or something like that. We're taking our two boys snowboarding tomorrow with some family friends.

Never really got into golf.

Thats normal, the reason most stock air intakes are restrictive is to make them quite. Kinda like a muffler on the other end. That's why the K&N can get better flow, they don't worry about the noise.

That's a great description. It does sound like it needs a new muffler, from the inside anyway. Actually, its getting pretty close. It has that tinny sound that they get before they bust through. Thanks for the input though.
