Question just put new timing kit on '94 22re

hey guys,
i just bought a '94 pickup with 22re a few weeks ago. my brother in law claimed to be mechanically able to fix it up for me (it needed a new head gasket and clutch) so i ordered the parts and let him go to work. in the first round, he changed the head gaskets and put a new timing chain kit on for me. the clutch is on the way and will be next. i am having a problem with the timing though i think. it almost feels to me (i am inexperienced in this area) as though the engine isn't getting enough gas, like there is just no power there. my brother in law says that all the timing stuff is set right- any ideas where to go from here? i saw on earlier posts stuff about the o2 sensor, cleaning the throttle body, and the tps being closed at idle? do any of these make sense to you guys? the problem is noted in at least first, second, and third gears. i had a friend here at school try to help me out but he too is unfamiliar with toyotas and was asking about a blue valve bolted to the valve cover that has something to do with regulating fuel pressure (i looked in my book and it is labeled as vsv or vsf). could something here be to blame?

Is your friend specifically familiar with this engine? Did he jumper the proper contacts in the check connector when he adjusted the timing? If you've a timing light it's easy to check this. The check connector (at least on my machine) is mounted on and rearward of the engine compartment fuse box, just inside the right (passenger side) fender. Grab the whole thing and slide it upwards from its mount, pop open the cover, and with the mount towards you on the left side will be 3x3 group of nine contacts. With the motor running at idle, jumper the center one of these to the upper right one and you'll hear the RPMs drop as the computer turns off its advance and the timing mark on the crank pulley (which you should fill with white paint so you can see it) should indicate 5 degrees advance. (release and rotate the distributor to correct if necessary.)
Next I'd check the tps adjustment. Unless someone else here wants to document how to do that I'd suggest getting a book--shop manual is probably best, but expensive. I've no experience with others.
Hope this is helpful.

I had readjust my TPS a while ago. I used the following site for mine...worked out great:

http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/cheaptricks/tps/index.shtml

I took my throttle body all the way off, then removed the TPS, and gave the throttle body a good cleaning with a tooth brush and some carb cleaner. I suggest removing the entire throttle body just because it is that much easier to adjust the TPS. One of the screws for the TPS is hard to access while it is on the engine. I mounted the throttle body in a vise just to keep it stationary and used an Ohm meter with aligator clips to make the adjustments. Also, make sure the spring return inside the TPS is clean....mine was gummed up which was causing the sensor not to return when the throttle was closed.

First check your TPS with the ohm meter on the engine.....maybe it won't even need adjusting...oh, and if you use the jumper to set your timing as NatChilds desribed, and you don't hear the engine's sound change, that could be a sign your TPS needing adjustment. A faulty TPS will not allow the electronic advance to be turned off.

Hope this helps.

I noticed that too when I posted the link. I thought it was just my computer, but evidently it is the site. That is the correct address....it even comes up if you do a Yahoo search for it. So I don't know what is wrong....maybe the site is down temporarily...

Well, I just tried the link again and it worked....

Try it again and see if it works for you:

EDIT: sorry that was my fault on the link....I forgot that capitalization matters....well, the link above should be working now...
