I guess this depends on if you have a carb or EFI...
I didn't know this, but found out from a previous thread. In a EFI application with the pump in the tank, you shouldn't let the gas get too low. The gas acts as both lubricant and a coolant for the pump. When the fuel level drops, the pump is no longer submerged and will heat up, possibly failing or reducing the life of the pump.....it was just a thought, I had no idea that this could happen, but it makes sense. Here is a link to the thread if you want to take a look.
WHile individual trucks may differ slightly, I can offer you the experience of my four trucks. I had an 85, two 87's, and an 88. All were basic 22r carbed motors. On all four, my guage would go as far below E as it would above F, which was quite a bit. I ran out once in six years, as I was pulling into the station at an 1/8 tank BELOW E.
I have a 86 22re and run tank to tank.....full to empty. Never had a problem with the fuel pump overheating and personally don't believe that is true. Maybe if you actually run it dry but not just from running it low. Guage will go below empty.
My wife hates how I run it to empty. It has become a game now and I have never run out of gas. However, when that day comes.....I will not call her for help, it will be my little secret.

Yes it will fail over time. So will your engine under normal use. Anything mechanical WILL fail over time. I am just saying there is no need for external lubrication of a fuel pump, IMO.

I've got a '86 xtra cab with 22r and carburator. My gauge goes well below empty and when extremely empty the red idiot light 'fuel' comes on. I've never run out of gas. My gauge does act weird however hen starting the truck. It always tells me there is more gas when I start and warm up than after it is warm or even running about 3-5 minutes. I don't know if the gauge is faulty, becuase it does this regularly, as if it's trying to tell me on start up how much fuel plus reserve there is, and then just reports the fuel minus reserve.
