Toyota Tacoma Recall

Is this on the thread somewhere? Just happened to fumble on this info, I thought this is something to talk about. I did not know much about the detail yet, but I will investigate further. As qouted below;

"2/15/2005 - Toyota Tacoma Recall

DETROIT (AP) - Toyota is recalling more than 22-thousand Tacoma
pickups because the parking brake may not work.
***Federal safety regulators say 2005 Tacomas with automatic
transmissions are involved in the recall.
***A Toyota spokesman says the Japanese carmaker issued the recall
after NHTSA (NIHT'-sah) received eight complaints. No injuries have
been reported.
***Toyota will notify owners next month. Dealers will make repairs
for free.

Angry Toyota Tacoma Parking Brake Recall

Ok here what it says;

"Toyota Tacoma Parking Brake Recall

March 15, 2005
Toyota is recalling 22,228 of its 2005-model Tacoma pickup trucks sold in the United States to fix a potential problem with their parking brakes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the problem stems from the fact that the parking brake cable lock nut on the trucks may not have been tightened properly.

"The lock nut may loosen and come off, which will reduce the effectiveness of the parking brake," NHTSA advises on its Web site.

"This condition could allow the vehicle to roll if the transmission is not placed into the 'park' position," according to the agency.

NHTSA says the parking brake defect has only been detected on Tacomas equipped with automatic transmissions."

Warning - 'Free' repair

Interesting. I recently rec'd a recall for the parking brake on my wife's car (non-Toyota). In goes the car for the 'free' repair and I walk out paying $700 for a new rear caliper (yeah, they're $370 each - charged @ list of course , installed for only $100/hr). Gee, the parking brake does seems to work much better, too bad the new caliper doesn't work at all now (when you step on the brake pedal that is - what a concept) . . . hey, its got three more! (The conversation with the tech - over the phone - trying to convince me that everything's OK was worth quite a laugh. . .its only the brakes after all.)
Beware - mfgs and dealerships find ways to get their pound of flesh, besides someones gotta pay for that design or assembly error (like I didn't learn that long ago - a good $700 reminder should last a while. . .)

when its warranty or recall work the dealer actually tends to make even more money than when its a customer so dont think the dealer loses any. its quite the contrary.

I was talking to someone from Toyota last week about my paint problem, and he boasted that Toyota doesn't issue recalls. So I reminded him that Toyota just a week earlier issued a recall for over 22,000 Tacomas for the emergency break. That's when he called it a "service advisory," not a "recall." Yeah, right.
