Power Steering in an 89

Ok, I have a 1989 V6 4WD with 183,### miles. The power steering pump is leaking, two individual shops mentioned it and I can see a build up of liquid around the pump and reservoir. Its not leaking bad were you see the drops on the group and the level within the reservoir is pretty much consistent. I have had the truck since late Oct. 04 with this condition. I want to look at fixing the problem but want to get your guys/girls opinions on the two options I determined. Option one is re-pact the pump as one shop and the dealer mentioned (don’t have cost but they said about 2-3 hours worth of work). Option two is to get an aftermarket pump (cost at one place was $280 and a new stock one is out of the question as the price just for the pump was around $400-500). So what would you do get the pump re-packed or get the aftermarket? Also any major pros/cons with either option?

Thanks.

Canada dunno

I dont know the answer to your question. But it makes me glad I have a $600 parts truck in the side yard which takes care of these dilemnas.

So that's my suggestion, either have a parts truck or get one from a junk yard where you should be able to pay minimal for a pump that is not leaking.

Thanks peterng and RICHIE. Toyota spare parts, unless its from teh dealer, are hard to come by in my area, you see more people driving their Toyota trucks. I checked out the link RICHIE and looks like it might be something way over my head, I'm gonna look at it again and study it a little more, I don't work on cars/trucks very much so this project to be a difficult one for me. I can do the basics like oil change and things and even changed out the radiator in my 91 Legend, but this pump reseal looks like it could be a little beyond my current abilities. I'm going to call a few places and see how much they charge for the labor to reseal the pump if I provide the parts. Once I get some estimates and take a look at the project again I'll figure out what to do. Thanks again I really appreciate the information.

ok if ya need a walk thru drop me a line or if ya have any specific questions feel free to do the same.just be sure to take it apart in a area that you will see if something falls out or off.it is a really simple job and as long as you take things apart in order paying attention to the way things are dissambled assembly is opposite.the directions on the link i gave ya is great to see step by step.OR put a video camera or take pictures behind you as you do it.good luck

Thanks Richie, I got the pump reseal at the dealer for $38 bucks, so I gonna study the directions and also see what the cost is for someone to do the reseal besides the dealer, just want to find out what other mechanics would charge, wishing I can find some to do it for $100 but I hight doubt it. Thanks again and will take you up on any questions I have about doing the change myself.

Hey Richie, I took a look at the website again and it looks a little to complicated for my skill at the moment. Places were looking to do the re-seal for around $220 and stealer was charging around $350-$400. I found rebuilt PSP at Autozone for $59 ($80core deposit) with a life time warranty, I think I might head towards this route, I could see myself screwing something up trying to re-seal the original, and end up having to purchase the rebuilt one. Any thoughts or comments on rebuilt PSP?

Thanks again.
