Starting problems: 86 4x4 truck

Hello folks,

I have a 86 toyota 4x4 pickup that I have had for about 10 years, I usually do all the work on it that I can handle doing myself.
I let my truck sit for about 10 days while i was on vacation and went to start it one morning, it started up fine right away then died (normal cold weather start). When I went to start it again the engine would not turn over, it would only make a strange, rhythmic sound. The closest i can describe it in text is pew-pew-pew-pew-pew with the key in the start position. I immediatly thought to replace the starter, so i did, and it still has the same problem.
So, before i go replacing more electrical hardware i dont need, does anyone have an idea as to what i need to fix/replace?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Sounds like the timing chain might have broke. The starter will turn the crank but no chain to the top side. Take off the distributor cap and see if the rotor is turning when you crank it.

I checked the rotor and it wont turn while cranking so i popped the valve cover off. The timing chain appears to be fine, not a lot of slack in it even.

i'd say pull your distributor out and make sure the drive isn't broken if the rotor will not turn and t-chain is o.k.
