hey everyone. I just finished putting my 92 4x4 back together last night, and i was very excited because it was a long job for me being as it was my first time working on a toyota. I did a valve job, head gasket change and timing chain job...
anyway, as i tried starting it last night, it would not start. It would turn over, but wouldnt fire. a couple of times it acted like it wanted to, but it just wouldnt. As far as i know, i hooked all ground wires back up and all injectors are hooked up, all the spark plugs and their wires are connected, and its hooked up to the coil. i checked the fuses under the hood, but they were all ok. i dont know why it wont start. fuel pump is brand new and the fuel lines are hooked up correctly. can someone please help me out?
Also, i seem to be leaking coolant from between the bottom of the timing chain cover and the oil pan, just dripping one drop at a time. I remember that i only hand tightened the timing chain cover and didnt torque it with the torque wrench, so i thought that might be why its leaking, but even after tightening all the bolts near the leak, it didnt slow it down at all. In fact, it started dripping a little bit faster after i tightened it more. I KNOW for a fact that i scraped all of the old gasket material from the block, and the timing cover was brand new with a brand new gasket, so i cannot imagine why this is leaking. Its quite frustrating to be honest, after all the crap that ive been through with this truck the last 2 months.
If anyone could help me, i would really appreciate it. Thanks alot.
ok, i tried turning the distributor, and it acted like it wanted to fire, but i turned it all the way so i had to take the distributor out and turn it another tooth. When i did that, i was able to get it to start, but only for a few seconds.
Also, i think i found where the coolant leak is actually coming from. There is a little metal pipe with a flange held on by two bolts that bolt to the timing chain cover, its right underneath the intake manifold. After turning the truck over i saw it bubbling and spurting out coolant. And it was leaking down the side on the edge of the timing cover. So i think i just have to seal that pipe a little bit better.
But im still not sure about the timing. Which way does the rotor have to be facing on TDC for cylinder #1?
Take the valve cover off and make sure that at TDC both #1 valves are closed. Then insert the distributor with the rotor facing the #1 plug contact on th cap. Leave the rotor a bit loose and it should start with that. You may have to turn the distributor counter clockwise to advance it a bit. Make sure you have the airbox/MAF sensor installed and connected to the throtle body, as the engine will not run without it.
yeah im certain the coolant is not from the head. I have made sure that the piston was at TDC before it wouldnt start, and i even double checked it today, it was fine.
I hooked up the MAF sensor, and placed the airbox and tube where they belong, but i didnt connect them completely or tighten them up. Ill have to do that tomorrow. Also, i think my problem may be the PCV valve hose not hooked up to the manifold and one other vacuum connection that i overlooked. I cannot seem to find the hoses for those 2 connections, i have no idea where i put them.
If someone has a closeup detailed picture of a 22re where the vacuum lines go, that would be awesome. I am so close to finally having this thing on the road. Thanks guys.
just because the piston is on TDC doesn't mean it is on TDC compression stroke, it could be on exhaust stroke, that is why Flash said to check the valves with the valve cover off.
it was on the compression stroke, i checked the cam lobes after rotating the crank... both valves were closed when the piston cam to TDC. This is my first time working on a toyota, but i am very familiar with timing issues from working on other vehicles.
im ruling out timing for right now, what i really need is a picture of the top of the motor facing the intake manifold so i can see if i have any vacuum lines hooked up wrong, and i also need to know where to hook the pcv valve up, since i have lost that hose and one other hose. The chiltons vacuum diagrams do not help me.
the pcv goes to the big port on the intake right by the pcv valve. usually it is just a 90 degree hose only about 4 inches long. I don't have a pic of it, but don't forget that most of these have two vac hoses that go over to the p/s pump
awesome, thanks guys! ive got my truck running now! Its warming up right now so i can adjust the timing, then im going to take it for a test drive! I cant wait!
