Popping while backing up.....

A while ago, I took my Taco on some sever off roading. There was a LOT of water and just as much mud. The problem is, now when I back up and turn to the left, it sounds like my left rear wheel is making a poppin\grinding sound. My truck seems to be notorious for getting stuff stuck in the brakes when I go 4-wheeling, so I think there might just be something stuck in the drum. My main concern is that the bearings or u-joints are going out. THe truck is a '98 with 80000 miles on it. I thought it seemed pretty premature for mechanical failure, but you never know. Does anybody have any way that I can inspect the wheel bearings and u-joints to see if they are truly bad? Thanks in advance

My 93 has always popped since brand new. Every time I cut hard and back up to the left I hear a loud POP in the left front suspension. Some say a Toyota worker was once killed by getting his head stuck in the left suspension and it popped his skull, and that popping sound can still be heard today. I don't believe it, but it's the best answer I have heard so far.

Yea, that could definitely make a popping sound. However, in my case I don't think my bearing was bad when the truck was brand new. It has 75K miles and the bearing are still original and good.
