20R questions

First, any way to tell what year the motor is? The title say 80, the door jamb says 79 and the distributor fits a 78,uses clips instead of screws. Secondly i got big carb problems. Started missing wouldnt rev sounded awful. Put plugs wires cap and rotor in it. Thought it was fixed get a few miles down the road, it starts again but way worse this time, barely got it into the parking lot. finally discovered if i blocked off air flow into the carb partially, it ran alpt better, su pulled the vaccum line off the choke pull off, tied choke closed, and limped it back home. Now is a carb rebuild in order? Any idea what area i need to look at? I really need help!!
