USA first post need advise on bad gas milage/power...

Hey All,
I just got a 99 toyota limited 4runner V6 and it's getting bad gas milage and underpower. I've installed a "trueflow" air intake that uses a foam filter in the existing air box. What are the precedures for getting more power and better gas milage....heres my take on it, and it's also got close to 80k miles on it....

A. bad or old spark plugs/wires
B. timing belt needs replacing...don't know the history on that
C. fuel filter need replacing but wouldn't explain the bad gas milage
D. Somthing I'm not aware of, maybe valve adjustment but don't hear anything clacking.

Any input feedback would be great! Thanks in advance,

Terry

i'm not too sure why either. but i'll give you my 2 cents. and let someone else finish up

a fuel filter can be a problem if they are clogged up because the fuel passes there to go into the injectors. So if you filter is clogged up less fuel gets thru. therefore you get the underpower and it will cuase poor gas milage as well. So dont count out the fuel filter. At 80k your plugs are most likely bad by now. So changing them would be a nice option. Not too bad of a job. Pretty cheap as well to do it yourself.

I'm not too great with 4 runners here. But maybe your timing is of if not controlled by your computer.

what is seafoam? enlighten me. I think I'll replace the fuel filter if I can find it and get to it....i suppose if I can replace the starter then I can do that. Also, the spark plugs are wierd.....wires connected to long plastic shafts...I guess the plugs are at the bottom of these sleeves/holes, right?

Cool

Try

The biggest improvement is going to be your driving habits.
Spend $300 on an SMT-6 & lean your fuel tables out some. Pick up a good 15hp too.

If you want to start doing it yourself, then I highly adise you to get a repair manual - Chilton, Haynes, dealer. Get them all since certain books will have different examples. I would also get rid of the foam air filter as foam will allow dust/dirt particles to slowly weave it's way through to your intake. Try your basic tune-up: spark plugs (platinum/iridium), bigger spark plug cables with less restriction (8mm-10mm), cap/rotor/point, fuel filter(s), fuel injection service, high flow catalytic converter, valve adjustment, timing.

Don't know why you think changing the timing belt and starter would help performance?
