starter problems
I have a '97 4Runner with 120K miles. On four occasions I have had the following problem:
When I start the engine I hear a strange whirring sound in the background, coming from the engine. I also notice that the brake light stays on, when I do not have the brake engaged. In addition, when I put the vehicle in drive (automatic) it feels as if the brake is engaged. When this has happened I stop the car and turn off the engine. But then the strangest thing happens: I continue to hear this whu-whu-whu-whu-whu-whu sound coming from the engine. I assume that sound is the starter motor, because the engine is clearly off, (I cannot rev the motor). After approximately a minute the sound stops by itself.
This problem has happened intermittenly, about four times in about four months.
I have assumed that there is something wrong with the starter engine.
Should I replace it? Should I replace the solenoid?
Is their something else that needs to be replaced OR am I completely missing the mark with my diagnosis?
Please help. Thank you.
