Angry 88 engine swap

swapped the 22re out of my 88 pickup no a/c (broken connecting rod) for a 22re out of a 87 four-runner with a/c and found it had a different wiring harness with longer connectors. i plugged in what i could and it started but had check engine light (error code 52 - knock sensor) and the temp gauge was fluctuating (needle would rise to top , stay there for a few minutes and then drop quickly). also the timing was way off and oil pressure gauge is showing low oil pressure.. anyway i swapped the harness connectors that were needed so all of the connectors but 2 would fit and still got the error code and temp gauge problem. put in a new thermostat, swapped thermostat housing back to my 88 (the 87 4runner had some kind of connector on the top), changed water temp sensor, changed knock sensor, checked continuity on all sensor wires - good, adjusted valves, and changed throttle position sensor. still have the same problems .. error code 52 (i reset it), fluctuating temp gauge, low oil pressure and timing off. i just won a ecu on ebay so im gonna give that a shot, maybe the 4runner harness screwed up the ecu from my 88 pickup?? any suggestions???

That sounds like a headache, I hope the ECU helps things out. I can comment on the erratic temp guage though. It may be due to "Temperature guage overshoot." Here's the link. Scroll down to where it says "Thermostat."

I just remebered finding information on different ecu part #'s. It looks like you must get the exact replacement ecu for 86-87. I hope you didn't fall for the sellers on ebay that claim an ecu will work for 84-88 models....that's bullshit!! Make sure the ecu is for the proper transmission too. Here are the ecu's for all 22re years from the yotatech website. Scroll down to Fahrenheit 451 post, you'll see his list.

thanks for the replies.. i posted the same thread in that forum and was told about the ecu differences by farenheit 451... cool

the temp gauge overshoot is different than what i am experiencing.. mine continues to cycle up and down and doesnt just happen when the engine is cold or whether the heat is on or off.. seems more like an electrical/signal type problem..

Most reputable repair shops always strip donor motors and use the intake manifold, wiring harness and throttle body off the original engine.also check the various sensors to make sure the plugs are the same.If your old engine blew and you didn't have any previous electrical problems,I'd switch all that stuff to your new engine instead of mixing and matching,.trying to swap ecus and stuff, you may never get it straightened out...I've taken an '884runner 22re and put it in a '90 2-wheel drive-swapping intakes is easy.good luck.
