loud noise and jumping

hey I’ve just joined here. I am currently in the navy stationed in Everett wa. I have a 89 pickup with a 4" lift on 35's. I was on this course last week when I was trying to get up this hill kind of and the tires started spinning out from under me. then I heard a really loud noise sounding like it was coming from the front end. so I stopped the truck and looked around and it looks like everything was still connected and all. so I then took it out of 4wd and unlocked the hubs. no noise or anything ran fine. then I got it on the road so I could take a better look at it and all. I can lock the hubs and not even put it in 4wd and move it slowly forward and like every 2 seconds or so you hear a loud bang and the truck kind of jumps up. I wanted to stop by here before I tried to go out and just buy stuff. I went to a 4X4 swap meet and picked up a ring and pinion for the front differential pretty cheap. is the whole front differential shot or should I just try the ring and pinion? or maybe im way off here any suggestions would be helpful. thanks a lot.

Dave.

Yeah, I would start with the ring and pinion since this sounds like a classic case of a broken gear on either the ring or pinion. Keep us informed.
