Angry Still have spark knock sensor alarm

I have a 1987 Toyota Granville Motorhome with automatic transmission. Engine is a 22RE on a 1 ton chassis. I purchased it last June with 57,000 miles. It ran very poorly, no power and ran hot. I checked the timing and it was 2 degrees ATD. I set it to what the decal said: 5 degrees BTD. The check engine light had been disabled by cutting the wire at the computer and I reinabled it.The "Chech Engine" light started coming on immediately after that. It comes on at around 18 to 22 mph just as it shifts into 2nd. The code is a "Spark Knock Sensor." I ran through several tanks of 89 octane to see if that was the problem, no difference. I ran 93 octane for 2 tankfuls, no change. I added 104 Octane booster to 93 octane fuel and that didn't help.

There is no pinging sound just the pesky engine light.

Can someone tell me where the knock sensor is and how I can disable it?

I dont want to disable the check engine light because I want to know if anything else goes wrong.

Thanks

Ivan Keup

Hey Ivan,

Did you check the base timing with terminals TE1 and E1 jumpered on your diagnostic connector? You need to tell the computer you want to check/set base timing. If you did not do this your timing is not correct. The knock sensor code does not necessarly mean your vehicle is detonating (Knocking) The sensor could be disconnected, or shorted internally. You do not want to disable this sensor! In the event that your engine does detonate, it will retard the timing - This prevents severe engine damage.

Do you have any additional drivability problems? Let me know. I can help
