Question truck died

posting it here since its a 77 toyota pickup. I was driving my truck all day with no problem. just going here and there and I went to the local grocer at just about sundown. It started up fine with no indications of anything but just stopped running when I got into the parking lot. I rolled it into a parking sapce and try to turn it on. It made no indication of it even trying to start and the lights on the gauges didn't even light up when I turned the key just before cranking it. checked under the hood and all seemed fine. I pulled the battery out, walked home, put it on quick charge for an hour, walked back and same result. dead. so its not the battery. The truck made no noise when it dies. it just turned off. Has plenty of gas, gave it a tune up a few days ago (spark plugs, filter, etc,) any ideas? This is my only form of transportation while my flacon get the 351w put in it. guess I'll ride my bike around town now.

any ideas?

If your connectors are clean and the cables are ok, I would suspect the fusible link or the ground connection.

Ya man, definately an electrical connection somewhere. Maybe at the starter or coil... something was vibrating for a long time and has finally broken down and separated. Get your test light out and track it down. Good luck!

Hey!

When was the last time your carb was cleaned out? Same thing happened to my 81 not long ago. Just don't let your mechanic tell you you need a new one.

cheers

Had this problem on a chevy once. For me, it turned out to be an ignition wire that grounded itself out. Made the thing just turn off and not make another noise.

Question it gets worse

upon further inspection and the help of two other people to push the truck back home, it became apparent that a small fuse that connects directly from the battery and eventually goes to the starter was broken. I replaced it and the truck started up fine. hoooray
I then proceeded to drive my truck to a locla shop to go drop off a fuel pump for my car. at the top of the hill at the highway exit, my truck turned off and fried wire smoke came out of my dash. hooray! .
WIth the help of a very nice passer byer we managed to get the truck out of the way. DId I mention it was almost 5:00pm rush hour? I checked the fuse I just replaced and it was fine. so I waited as a tow truck came for my truck.

I don't know what to do know. It has gone to a level where I am going to need to take it to a shop but its not worth it to put money into something that could brake on me again.

What do you think?

That fusible link blew the first time because something was shorted. If you find the source of the smoke, you will probably find out what was shorted. Fix that and your truck is as good as new....well, almost.

good luck

I agree with REB. There is a reason why the fuse broke. If there's a short, then you need to find out where it's shorting at and correct the problem. Replacing the broken fuse with a thicker fuse is not the way to do it and will cause something to FRY.

Wrong! According to SUPERMARIO: "It made no indication of it even trying to start and the lights on the gauges didn't even light up when I turned the key just before cranking it." This is electrical! If the truck cranks over, then it may not be electrical.

no surprise. today i went under my dash an dreconnected two different things that somehow got disconnected. I put a new fuse on the battery relay and the mini beast was alive!

I am going to drive it around for a day close to home and if i don't die its as good as fix.

the damn thing never gave me heck before I tried to pull the stereo out. it was a boptched job to begin with(bought it that way) and guess I must have disconnected the wiress. I don't know though
