best cheap truck/pickup/t100/taco

love toyotas and wld prefer to stick to toyota if i have to get a truck/pickup/taco/t100 or the likes...

mainly for scuba diving needs...

any good recomendations on which one, i know that i'm kinda limited by my budget, so the taco and t100 is definitely out, unless i can find one that's $5000 or less.

how does the early 80's toyota truck last, those iwth the 22re engine?

This one looks pretty clean, you can probably negotiate to 4k

EDIT
Actually there's a pretty good selection of tacomas in your area

^ woah, thanx for that..

erm.. any idea how good is their performance,

my needs are kinda like hauling probably 10 scuba tanks and probably 5 sets of scuba gear, looking at probably 500lbs cargo and driving for like maybe 150-300 miles one way hoping to do maybe 70-80mph with a pretty decent gas consumption rate.

i know i have too much request... but low budget college kid, who is spending mad money on scuba diving.

The 22R-E was a great engine. It wasnt all that powerfull but in a truck it does just fine (its not enough motor in a 4Runner though!).
As far as durability/reliability goes, Id say the 22R-E is probably one of the best 4-cylinders Toyota ever made. In my opinion, it comes second only to the 22R in terms of durability.
Im pretty sure it made 118 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque.
Overall the 22R-E was a VERY good engine. It cant match the power of the newer Toyota 4-bangers, but its not fair to compare the 22R-E to the newer 4-bangers. You really cant even make a comparison between a 2.4L SOHC and a 2.7L DOHC with VVT-i. The technology and added displacement of the 2.7L are just too much of an advantage!

you may want to keep an eye open on eBay.
There are some good deals if you are pacient enough to wait for them

How handy are you?
could you build your own bed
replace engine

do you care about body condition

Older land cruisers are very cool too - especially if you are handy

i don't mind waiting for a good deal, will be keeping an eye on autotrader and ebay...

having a "sports car" of sort aint that good for scuba diving, esp after i lower her.

Celicas, Supras and MR2s arent exactly known for lots of trunk space, eh?
You ever consider finding maybe a Previa or an older Sienna?
Then you would have all the cargo space you would every need and still have the nice ride and fuel economy of a car.
If you found yourself a Previa not only could you use it to haul scuba gear, you could also do some drifting with it on the weekends! (because its rear-wheel drive)
Just imagine the looks you'd get if you did some "kaimundo drifto" with a slammed Previa!!!

^ hmmm sounds like a plan.. thanx for the suggestion, Cap'n

my baby has alot of trunk space, i can fit 4 tanks and my dive equipment in them, but weight is the main issue here, 2 steel 95 cubic feet scuba tanks weigh about 100lbs when they are full and plus my dive equpiment, they add up to about 150lbs easily and once after i lower my baby, there's no way the suspension will be able to hold that much weight...

a "sports car" is definitely not good for a scuba diver... sigh...

edited: PS, are u sure those 2 makes are driftable? the CG of the car is damn high, worried that they might just flip over...

I think they'd be alright. Im not saying that you would probably ever end up on the cover of Import Tuner, but I think they would hold their own.
Remember, I said a "slammed" Previa so that means they would be lowered at least 2".
You know, drop it down 2-3", slap on a set of Motegi rims with Bridestone Potenza tires and a turbo and you'd be in business!
I tell you what Aaagogo, you build a vehicle like I have specified and I will come down to Florida and drive it at (and beyond) its limit. Afterall, being from Wisconsin Im used to driving on ice and snow, so being sideways is no big deal to me!
