Timing Belt inspection

Captain

Is there any way to determine if the timing belt had been changed? Previous owner's records do not show if it's been changed, so I took off the upper timing cover and looked.

V6, 1997 T-100 90k miles

The outer surface is shinny and smooth, the inner face, pulley side is not frayed, or edges worn, but I must admit I'm not sure what a new belt would look like, I just know it don't look worn out either.

Are there any telltale clues, new gasket material on timing belt cover? or something I can check.

thanks,

Al

PS sorry for jumping in on the thread, but it looked like a good place to ask.

I'm going by serpentine belts, and if the outer surface is shiny and smooth on serp. belts, it has been on the vehicle for a good number of miles. I would assume that it's the original belt.

Timing Belt Condition

I tend to agree, the outer surface is smooth and based on photos a new belt would have a textured outside surface.

Looks like it's time to change it.

Thanks,
