Question 94 22RE Rough/surge at Idle

94 Toy pickup with the 22RE. Bought in Jan needing head gasket with engine disassembled down to head. Replaced timing set and head gasket. Engine ran very rough, surge at idle, then die. Not starting easily. Runs OK at higher RPM. FOund low compression in 3 cyls. Bought and installed new long block. Now runs the same as with old engine. Surge and run very rough at idle, clears up higher RPM. Has new fuel filter & plugs. Havent changed dist cap and wires.
As I bought it with the top of the engine disassembled, there is certainly a possibility of having a vaccum line mis placed. Would have beeen great if I had been able to disassemble it myself so that I could lable lines etc. Any suggestions? Thanks

My 94 22R motor does the same thing. I checked everything. Been doing it for 4 years now. Only in the winter time though. Ive replaced everything during a tune up. Gas filter Cap rotor plugs & wires. . I seem to think it may be the wires. But I t keeps going strong 140,000...... Good luck. Oiler

Try this...

I take it you checked your timing. Is you advanced it - try playing around with it and retard the timing "slightly".

ALSO...
Your vaccume system is not operating at it's optimum. It sounds like there could be a leak. Your power break system uses a lot of vaccume. If you disconnect some of this system, when starting your truck it will idle very very weird. I found this out un-plugging parts of my vaccume system and watching the results.

My yota idles at a perfect 1000 rpms after getting warmed up. Its seems from what I read mine and everyone elses for these years rev's up when it is very cold, until it is warmed up.
