Tacoma headers and cats

Hi all,
I have a 2001 Tacoma 2wd 2.4L xtra cab.
I was hoping to replace the exhaust header and pipe up to the cat with a LC Engineering SS E-pipes.
My Tacoma turns out to be a CAL truck with two cats.
Can I get rid of one of the cats?
Will it still pass emmissions?
Should I slide the front cat back? (This will require quite a few mods )
Can I replace the two cats with one high performance that will still pass emmissions?
Do you know of any performance parts that might work, like the magana-flow 50004 or other cats that might work?
Many thanks for any suggestions,
ribakit

The catalytic converter is the main part in emissions control. You will certainly not pass emissions if you remove them. And yes, there are high flow cats out there that will pass emissions.

Any suggestions for type of single cat? Instead of a california cat system, I mean. Will I need to reprogram the ECM if I get a single cat, or will the OS's be OK with it?

Before I speak ahead are the oxy sensors on the Cats? Cause the ECM isn't going to notice as long as you don't have to remove them, but it might change your gas consumption if it makes the ECM think you're running to lean or rich. But if you remove an oxy sensor the ECM is going to know and your engine light will be on.. one way you can fool it is just to cut the wires and wire it into the other sensor.. this is provided you match the wires up right. But aslo I don't have a clue about the laws in california.

I live in Connecticut, that is why I'm exploring options other than two Cats. I have two oxygen sensors-neither one is mounted in the cats. The first one is in the e-pipe before the first cat. The second one is in the pipe after the second cat. The distance between the two cats is about twenty inches. The exhaust manifold that I'd like to put in has an adapter/connection for the first oxygen sensor. In order to fit it I would have to remove the first cat. The second oxygen sensor would remain in the exhaust pipe after the second cat. I just hope that the second cat (the one that will remain) can do the job without setting off the engine light.

YES, it is possible to take both cats off and replace them with one high performance cat. YES, the truck will still run normal (but with more HP - due to new EXH header) os2 sensors do not light up. If you want more info write here.... too bad this forum was no help though.

Smog laws are tricky and vary state to state, so it's hard to give good accurate info on that subject. Sorry you didn't hear what you needed, but if you went and asked your local smog guy to get the info you posted above, that's the best source since he's the guy you have to please. I live in CA, so I could give you an idea about what would be required HERE, but that would have been no use to you in Conn. Good luck with your upgrades... the 2.7 is a good engine.
