From my experiences you should be able to tell your head gasket is bad just by oil leakage around the head of the motor, i don't have much experience with toyota motors but if your gasket is bad your motor should have a bit of oil under where the head mounts on the block.

The head gasket just went out in my truck twice. I was a little mad about that. My mechanic screwed me over, but anyways. When your head gasket is out, some symtoms my be, burning coolant, or mily looking oil. Bad gas mileage, hard starting, missing on a cylinder. white exhaust, a compression check on each cylindar might be an easy check also. Hope this helps
A leak down test pushes compressed air thru your engine, and a guage stuck in your rad measures the rate of escaping air.If you have a bad head gasket...you'll know quickly.Have you ran any stop leak through your system?it may buy you some time.
