Toyota Turbo Help!

I am trying to get some more horsepower out of my engine(1991 22RE) ane want to slap on a turbocharger. Rite now my engine is getting rebuilt. I am getting it bored out, a new rv cam, chromally rings and the head is being ported and polished. It is being bored out .020" over. It is actually done in mm but that is about what my uncle got when he converted it. I want to no what turbo to put on it. I'm looking at a garret t3/t4 hybrid. I dunno what I'm looking for though, as in like compresser trim and that stuff. I'm new to all this. If someone could help me out it would be great. And then what to get for a wastegate. I couldn't find anything on the net about this so i thought i would ask.

Turbo 22R info

Been there and done that. Putting a turbo system on a non-turbo engine design and making it work can be done but it does not come cheap. I had an 81 SR-5 that I put a turbocharged 85 model 22R-E, complete with FI. Built the engine to be a hot rod but also be a daily driver. Best I ran through the 1/4 mile was 14.00's @ 100mph. Lot of fun. Towed the boat pretty good as well! Loooked and sounded like a stock Toy but a few Lightening's and SS 454's found out otherwise! Sold the truck but kept most of the hi-po stuff. Still have a new Turbo and exhaust manifold I need to part with if you are interested.

whats the turbo and how many pounds of boost did you run with it. I have been on the net looking for the best combination. I'm interested in a t3/t4. What hi-po parts do you all have?

The turbo is a t3/t4 hybrid that was built by the late John Myers of Majestic Turbo in B'Ham AL. For street use I was able to run 12 psi on premimum if it was a cool day. Used an HKS AICII and a rising rate fuel pressure regulator for fuel enrichment. Ignition was MSD 6AL with a boot timing master. Ran a small intercooler and had a 3" exhaust system. I built the engine using a lot of LC engineering components to deal with the extra stress. Biggest problem was using the stock injection for normally aspirated 22r-e. Would have liked to use a programmable system but never got around to it. Truck was a lot of fun at red lights!

Not sure if you all are aware of this or not, but Toyota offered a turbocharged version of the 22R-E on the 4Runner in the late '80s.
They looked exactly like any other 4Runner but they had a small tag on the back that said "SR5 Turbo".
They were supposed to be pretty good in the power department. Toyota didnt go crazy with the boost, but they were able to get 150 hp out of that engine (not bad considering an N/A 22R-E was only 118 hp). It allowed that little 2.4L to make just as much power as the 3.0L V6.

86 Turbo Pickup

I have a 1986 Toyota SR5 Turbo 4X4 Extra Cab Pickup that has the stock toyo setup. I was hoping it would have a little more zip than it does, but I am sure the 4 wheel drive adds a substantial amount of weight to the front of the vehicle. You could probably get more zip out of it with a manual transmission, but mine is an auto with OD. I don't drive mine very much but it gets plenty of use during hunting season. I bought it off the original owner about 18 months ago. It has 111K miles on it and isn't covered in rust.

I haven't done any mods but I did add an HKS Turbo Timer and a Sony CD Player. My son drives it over the summer while he is home from school, otherwise I take it out once a week and run around town in it. It makes all of my hunting trips and the four wheel drive is outstanding.

I have a hard time trying to get any information off this bulletin board for my stock turbo. Not too many owners running a factory turbo so you are on your own when it comes to repairs. Mine has the 22 RTEC motor, which is the 2.4L 4 cylinder with a turbo charger and EFI. Not many out there with this setup, so my suggestion is if you go turbo, you might want to make sure you know a good mechanic.
