help with 22re engine building

ok im a bit green when it comes to building engines but i am looking to build a bullet proof engine that has more horsepower and torque than stock with out spending alot of money. i think i want to run a higher compression piston and oversized valves or i may just buy a complete performance head. if i run higher compression pistons do i need to do anything special to the block besides the usual machine work ? what would a higher compression piston do with the stock 22re fuel injection set up? anybody have suggestions on how the best way to set up the short block for more performance without spending over say $750 on the machine work and the rotating assy. im just looking for suggestions besides lc engineering because that stuff is really expensive im just looking to rebuild the block i have for more performance than the stock 22re had my budget is about 1000 or so i have a machine guy who has quoted me a long block build for roughly 750 but i want to build a little better than stock and make sure it will run 150,000 miles or more. basicly i just want som eopinoins on what you guys think except for ones like get more money and that kinda stuff. more like what kind of stuff to discuss with the machinist. any suggestions are appreciated tia.

750 for long block is enough to do your basics. id recomend checking out engnbldr.com for 100 times better prices and service than LC. for more noticable power its hard to get from just machine work. i went .02 over bore for a fresh start and that does give a greater volume to the engine but not nearly enough to notice a power increase. going .06 over on a v8 you would barely notice the increased displacment. just make sure you use a hiflow oil pump first and foremost. for higher comp you can run 9.5:1 on 87 octane with no problem. id try 10:1 on 91 octane if you want to get creative. for high comp you need to do a few things: go with a overkill ignition (msd 6a witha blaster coil), open your spark plug gap a bit, get cold air into your intake, get exhaust gases out though a header, move hot air out of the engine bay (dont force cold air in). if you run a forged piston you will be fine on pump gas (93octane) up to 11:1 compression. you can get pistons and combustion chambers thermal coated too but that gets pricy.

anyway id just do 9.5 - 9.7:1 compression, bigger valves(engnbldr), a cam(263 or 268 from engnbldr), header(pacesetter) and exhaust(2.0 to 2.25 inch), and play withthe intake and that should keep you within budget and give yourself a noticable gain.
hope it helps, feel free to email me for any help i might be able to give. good luck

honestly if you dont need em the forged pistons are like $650 you dont need to spend. just grind the crank .010 and withteh new bearings you'll be brand new. these things are pretty bullet proof as the are so unless you want to hit it with high compression or boost or n20, it'll be just fine. dont be sorry about the questions, keep em comming.

Forged is the way to go but very expensive. The stock crank and rods are forged but pistons are not. Horsepower and cheap don't fit together!! It is best to get a complete head with matching cam. To much cam kills an engine. There is stroker kits for the 22r engines but from my studies it only makes big difference in torque, but only a slight difference in horsepower. The best way to go is to probably add a supercharger
